Hey yall my drake seems to have an infected preening gland....he hasn't been able to swim in a while and that's what I'm guessing it is from, but he has been quarantined with his sick mate and they have been very cold. He is quite yellow all over and I know those are just more signs of infection. The gland itself is definitely swollen and yellow. I've read some about what to do but I guess I just want personal opinions from yall.....Help!!!!!!

Him and his mate are sick and they are very cold? are you keeping them outside while sick?
What is wrong with them? beside preen gland.
his mate Munchkin has extreme bumblefoot I have been treated for a long time. She is getting worse and I have tried many medications. I tried keeping just Munchkin alone but Cletus would freak out and attack everyone and anything to get to her. She kept throwing herself at the fence. They stay in a small coop closer to the house for easier treatment. They shiver when I open the coop and such. On warmer sunnier days I put them out in a small quarantine pen.

Have you opend the bumble up to get out the infection? been to the vet for antibiotics and treatment?I know it's not feasible for many of us. What all have you done and what medications?
As for the preen gland a picture would be great but when I had solid white Muscovy the yellow waxy stuff that comes out of the gland would turn their feathers yellow at times. A nice warm compress can help with inflammation but showing a picture will help alot.

I had a vet out and he cut it open and pulled some infection out. He's not a bird vet, he specializes in equines, but he has worked on ducks before. I don't think he got all the hard clumps of infection out, since it has only gotten worse since. He told me to leave the wound open....and I did for a day....and I notice now that was a big mistake. I should have wrapped it immediately.....but he told me not to. We cut into it again and pulled some more out. I've tried numerous times to pull out the infection out, but its so difficult as it seems to go farther then the opening. I can grab it with the tweezers and pull but it won't come. I could try with a knife but she flings her leg no matter how you hold it still. I soak every day and rewrap with a sugar and iodine paste that I know has done wonders for infections on animals before, but I also have done Neosporin separately. I have done amoxicillin for a week but then switched to baytril. She was on that for 2 weeks no improvement. She shakes also. I'm pretty discouraged since this is my baby and I've tried so much to help her. I'll try to get you a pic of the oil gland today. Its pretty hard by myself.

Get the tricide neo and try it I have heard good things about it. Poor thing that looks so painful. Keep up the soaks in the neo. When my Runner had a bumble without a scab the vet put her on an antibiotic and it didn't help so I ended up using a scalpel and opening it to pop out the bumble. Not saying you should do this just saying not always antibiotic can get to this it's like it's encapulated.
