Crowing
All good advice above. I'd go with a light colored metal roof, open air design, (I live in Missouri, and have two complete walls open) and bare floor with deep litter ..... I use wood chips of varying sizes, forest debris, (sticks, leaves, rocks) raked up from the forest floor, and the bare minimum of store bought pine shavings.
I only clean the coop twice a year, adding debris as needed. I remove and compost the run material, then replace what I removed with the coop clean out, and put fresh debris back in the coop. The only reason I do this twice a year, is to harvest the compost, as (for me) this works pretty much as a self sustaining system.
I do use poop boards under the roosts, and clean those every day or two. I also use straw for the nest boxes.
I have 20 chickens, and about half venture out into the snow, and half are scared to death of it. They all like eating it though .....
