I have a dream of building a coop with miami glass block and a clear, corrugated plastic roof, is there any reason i can't build from these materials? i live in west florida, zone 8b, and will not be providing supplemental heat or light.
i know these blocks are expensive, and it probably would not be totally glass block, maybe footed with cement blocks? I think the glass would be very easy to keep clean and attractive. I could build in a ventilation vent or screen (or 3). no fan though.
i could also build a living roof onto the top of it instead of the corrugated plastic. that would keep temps down due to passive swamp cooling effect.
I can only have 4 hens and would like to get a smaller breed, maybe cornish. this is a long way off though, still have to work on the family a bit
I'm thinking they would be like a chicken aquarium when they are sleeping, easy to check on them. the coop would be kept in the shadiest part of my yard. No predators around here - the coop would be in the best protected spot of my place, overhung with branches. I have no dogs or other scary animals, just me and the kid and the rabbits. How small can a coop be if they have a run as well? i would think it wouldnt need much more room than the four spots to lay in.
What do you think?
