Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

In a couple of hours, my sister and I will be leaving for our annual trip to Grand Marais, MN, up on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It's a week at a lovely little lodge without cell phones or internet.

And, without the responsibilities of caring for critters. My long-time pet sitter is back from Arkansas and will spend the week at my house, tending to everyone's every needs.

Hope everyone else has a great week, too. But, I think mine will be better!
Sounds lovely. Have a great time. :)

when we had guineas, we had no ants, ticks or beetles.
even in recent years when the wild turkeys visited , the bug
population was down. but this year we are surrounded on three sides
with cornfield. the turkeys don't like to wander through it to
get here from the woods.
My brother puts out beetle traps
I think he just enjoys catching them. lol
our deer are back. eating the fallen apples.
there are four of them, no fawns, though.
we finally had a little rain. filled the rain barrel
half full.
I am working on sloping the ground away from
the house on the north side. it is not going to be
easy because the ground is so flat..

6 AM and it's just starting to rain pretty hard.
now we will see if it fills the second barrel.

Yes, the first barrel is full of water. Not quite
high enough to spill into the second barrel by 3''.

I checked Anjanet's profile.
WichickMama has not been on byc since
May 25, 23 ..
I hope she is well.
we have been getting a little rain here and there.
my first barrel is full, and it did spill a couple of gallons
over into the second barrel.
tonight we are scheduled for a long rain going into
Monday morning.
the lawn is green, the Japanese beetles are back,
the four deer are hanging around, and it seems like
another batch of cotton tails has been born.
No cats in sight.
last night we went to Annie's 60th class reunion.
we couldn't remember the last time we got all dressed
up fancy. lol I even wore long pants.. lol

Hope you had a good time at your reunion Jim even with having to wear pants.

Looking forward to that predicted rain. We have been harvesting our sweet corn slowly. The rain may push us into need to freeze some very soon. Hope we actually get what they say.

@WIchickMama has been gone a long time. Hopefully she just got busy with life.

Caught the fox running around the pasture last night when we went out with the dogs. Husband shot a few times but it's hard to actually hit anything while holding a big spotlight. He said the fox was running back and forth and didn't know what to do. Maybe he stays away for a while. Of course now we also have a coyote sneaking about. That concerns me more.

now with all this rain, we can mow the grass again, eh?
our thermostat went out on the canning burner on the electric
stove. all it does is goes to red hot.
Annie checked at a local appliance store for a thermostat.
after waiting a week, they called and said it would cost just
under $1oo.oo. I told Annie to wait. I did some preliminary
checking on the internet. most thermostats cost about
$12.oo. probably some shipping charge, too.
I don't have the exact part number yet.
DD Barby has 80 tomato plants. she has
tomatoes coming out of her ears. all varieties.
red , small, large, yellow, black etc.
she sells plants and these are left overs that didn't sell.
she can't can in her tiny kitchen, so she will bring them here
and we will split the bounty..
Lisa, you have to hit a fox dead center. they have
three inches of fur all around their body. makes it
look like a big target.

80 tomato plants? Your DD must be adventurous. I'm overwhelmed with 6 plants. Only so many tomatoes that we can eat.

I'm on the fence about actually removing the fox at this point. Not much more he can take. Just want to remind them to be wary. The coyote on the other hand can go away. There's lots of them around here. The noon whistle will often make them sound off. I've heard them more in the daytime this year than at night.

Yesterday was a nice day to me. We got about 3/4 inches of rain, and those cooler temperatures in the 60's was refreshing. Not looking forward to 90 degrees again.
