Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

Seeds are starting to sprout, can't really see them, but they are there, so going well for now.

Hey, Jim, if you want to join my one-person "I'm Already Sick of Winter Club," I will step aside from my self-appointed post and let you be president. I just read that Fort Dodge -- less than 12 miles away -- has already recorded 27 inches of snow this month. And, we're under winter storm watch tonight, which will be quite cruel since it's supposed to reach a very decent 42 degrees today.

How are your window plans coming along?

Lisa, I'm impressed that you've got seeds sprouting. I am The Worst at getting indoor germination. I'm anticipating lovely winter salads for you.

I really like that you're using your aquarium in the process. Until I moved out to my current place, I always had aquariums from the time I was a kid. I find them extremely calming -- until one of the inhabitants dies. Or leaves the tank. Among those fleeing my aquariums were a small eel, a newt and a crab. It ended badly for all.

Seed Savers is taunting me with emails about new releases, including something called "celtuce," which is supposed to be popular in Asian cooking. Have you heard of it? Or grown it? I'm giving it some consideration for planting outdoors if spring ever comes.

I let the dogs out yesterday, unleashed, because they dash back in when it's cold. But, time passed and no dogs. Turns out something had killed a rabbit and left the remains (which I later relocated). There has been a big bunny that lives under the previous owner's playhouse; I did not see the rabbit yesterday, and based on tracks in the snow, I don't expect to see him again.

It's been a couple of days, but there have been regular flyovers by snow geese. I think they are magnificent. So is the eagle who has been flying too low and too close for my comfort.

Now I see enough germination to remove the lids.

I'm enjoying the snow for now. We haven't had a lot in the last few years, so to me it's a bit refreshing. Dogs love it as long as it doesn't get too cold. Than they are quick to get back inside which is a plus sometimes. Today actually felt warm to me. It's in the 20's. So I guess I'm acclimating. Expecting below zero temps by the weekend.

Lisa, congrats on the germinating lettuce!

I am very sorry for your snowfall. 😢 Officially, Fort Dodge had accumulated 27 inches of snow in the first nine days of the month. I'm running out of spaces; I can't lift shovels of snow much higher.

While the one-warm-day break was great, what followed wasn't. Not only did all the melty stuff refreeze into dangerous ice, but they weren't fooling about the high wind advisory.

I went out yesterday morning to find the latch unhooked on the Taj Ma-Coop pop door and snow inside the coop, all the way to the back. I dutifully removed four 5-gallon buckets of snowy bedding and replaced it in the afternoon.

The driveway gate, which had been blown off its hinges in the last wind storm and had its frame broken, was only blown open this time. Lids off two of the feed garbage cans had also blown off. One was near the cans, the other up by the deck steps; both cans had snow inside that had to be scooped out. Ice had formed at the bottom of the run door to the young girls' coop and had to be chipped away, and the biggest, most expensive remaining run tarp was shredded.

This morning, coyotes decided to hold a Christmas concert off to the north. The yipping was so loud that I could hear it from the kitchen with (of course!) all the windows and doors closed. I did my crazy lady-yelling-into-the-night routine.

I've read that coyotes change the tone, pitch and direction of their calls to sound like their numbers are greater. I'm pretty sure there was at least a duet at 4:45 a.m. Tracks in the extremely plentiful snow show they've been the full length of the driveway and up near the duck shelter. The runners wouldn't even come out for breakfast yesterday.

Barb that is quite a bit more snow than what we have. It does make everything more difficult. Sounds like you had pretty strong winds too. That's no fun. We saw some tracks of a single coyote trotting around our property. They haven't bothered us in a while. Hope they stay away.
