Hi, I'm Sherri, a country girl who's had to land in the city. Had chickens and other livestock as a kid in Arkansas, but that's a whole different way of life from being in city limits in Vallejo. Would really appreciate any tips and tricks to establishing a happy, healthy flock, primarily for large brown or green eggs, but also for meat as necessary. I'm a 56 year old newbie, so I could really benefit from some of your wisdom before I jump in so I don't have to step in all the potholes myself. I'm having a harder and harder time buying commercial eggs and meat due to the horrible conditions the hens are raised in.

Hi Sherri I spent a good number of years in California myself. And managed to keep Chickens Under the radar!!!!! My preference for dual purpose Birds Would be marans. Although They can be pricey Depending on Variety and quality

Hi, Sherri, welcome to BYC. Start by clicking on 'The Learning Center' located at the top of the page. Then go to the forums - read and question away. Plan and you will be set to establish your flock. Good luck.
