I lost my sources for free organic barley, I was cleaning up around the edges of their grain barn. So I switched to the dried beet shreds, my chickens love them but are they good for them? I am also feeding them chopped alfalfa and their regular chicken food.

As a treat it's fine. As a feed ingredient, it's used extensively in livestock rations. It's so deficient nutritionally it will easily throw the diet and production off without fortifying with protein and vitamins/ minerals.

Chickens fed Beet Pulp. One of the lowest-priced sources of animal feed, beet pulp, is what is left over from melon-sized sugar beet processing the sugar. Beet pulp, which is available as shreds or pellets, will extend your feed budget, but it should not serve as the only food source for your chickens.
