Dried Distillers Grain (DDG) is anyone adding to their feed.

I just read a study by the University of Georgia that adding 3% DDG to commercial poultry feeds will increase egg production and enhance the yolk color. Also adding 3% DDG to Broiler feed increases weight gain. The same study showed no increased performance by increasing the percentage above three. In Broilers, adding 16% or more actually decreased weight gain. Anyone doing this?

I've been feeding my chickens spent brewer's grain, which is similar. In my totally unscientific, no-control -group experiment, they thrive on it. It probably only comprises 5% or so of their diet, though.

I work at an Ethanol plant where we produce DDGS as a bi-product so I have it readily available. The local poultry farms is one of our largest buyers of DDGS. I am interested in feeding DDGS to my free range gals in the winter up here in Michigan. I would like to see what a good winter diet including DDGS would consist of. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Feed per egg produced really drops off in the winter here, I would like to be able to lower my feed costs. Keeping the girls happy & healthy is priority #1 though.

Since I first started this thread, I have had DDGs added to my broiler feed which I have custom ground. Since I did this, I am feeding less and getting more weight on my birds. I do not add it to layer feed however, simply because it is a pain to measure out 3% and mix it throughout the feed. If I had layer feed custom ground or had my own grinder/mixer, I would definitely use it.

Where in Michigan are you from?
