I am building a 10x 14 building that will be divided into two 10x7 coops. I am siding it with smart\side (the kind that resembles hardboard - the cheap stuff $20 for a 4x8 board). To protect this from water damage, I imagine that I need some sort of dripedge along the cutouts for the windows and the doors. I have cut the siding flush with the 2x4 framing members. I am building the windows myself out of 1x and plexiglass and they will be hinged at the top to swivel open at the bottom.

Two questions.

1. Do I need to protect the upper edge of the opening as well (I am assuming that I would put something on the vertical edges and the bottom edge as the very minimum.

2. What would you use as flashing? A dripedge that I found at the roofing section of lowes would do it, but I am wondering if there is something else that would work better. I also saw the rolls of aluminum flashing 10" high. Tar paper? Tyvek?

Opinions and suggestions are very appreciated as I am working on this this week.

If you look at a window on your house, you will see that it is trimmed all around. Do the same on the coop.

This I understand. I just wanted to make sure I had something in addition to the trim. On my house there is at least some kind of flashing or flashing tape to protect the substrate from water that may find its way behind the siding. I still think I need something to prevent water from getting in between the framing and the siding.

I just found this on the Lowe's website - window tape 3"x 50' Would it be possible to glue this to the 2x4s that block the opening and over the siding to be covered by the trim?

House wrap generally covers the studs and wraps into the window openings. The siding and windows are installed over the wrap.

The wrap keeps the moisture off of the studs, insulation, and whatever else is inside the wrap. The casing and sill will keep water out of the interior.

As far as the product you mention, you might just as well pick up some scrap house wrap from a building site and staple it in place over the windows as you describe. Just ask, they usually have plenty for what you need just going out in the trash.

thanks. in this case I needed to protect the edges of the composite smartside. I have no access to a building site. I ended up getting the tape and used that to cover the edge of the siding going out about 1.5 inches. this is covered with trim. The tape was easy to work with, and I hope it will serve my purpose.
