Some of my hens have really dry crusty beaks, the temperature here ranges from -2C and 4C (28.4F and 39.2F) Is there anything I can do to help them? It looks uncomfortable, I’ve read that pure coconut oil is okay for chickens but everyone on the internet seems to have a different opinion.

Welcome To BYC

Do you have photos of your hens and their beaks>

Sometimes they can get a bit crustiness from digging in dirt or eating wet feed/mash. This would be normal. If the beaks are really crusty, you may want to just wipe them off with a damp cloth.

If the beaks are dry from weather, then you can apply a thin layer of coconut oil or vitamin E oil to see if that helps.

What do you feed, including treats?

I feed Layers pellets, Growers pellets, a mix of grain, grit, oats and sometimes some dry fruit, and some veg. Don’t have any photos right now because they’re in bed.
