Hello, readers! I just wanted to share my first time incubating story. I ordered 6 Serama eggs from eBay. I received 9 all in great shape. I thought my broody Silkie hen would do the hard work for me but she changed her mind. So at the last moment I bought a Little Giant incubator from TSC. This is the cheapest model, no automatic egg turner (I hand turned them religiously 3 times a day). Before the eggs arrived I turned it on and was playing around with the temp and humidity. I could never get it right. I did purchase a reptile temp and humidity reader from PetSmart ($14) bc during my million hours of research I learned to never trust the original. Anyway, I can across videos of people successfully dry incubating eggs and thought “why not”. So for the first 16 days the temp was at 99.9 with humidity shifting between 30-40 (mostly lower 30s) and I live in East GA. On day 16 I put a wet sponge and paper towels to keep the temp 60-70. On day 19, 4 of my 5 remaining eggs hatched. The 5th egg was the smallest and I cracked it open after knowing it was a goner. It was fully developed but I think just too small. Attached you will see my 4 babies. I have two grey Silkies, 1 mottled Frizzle and 1 smooth black with some brown.
If you’re like me and completely horrified with the whole incubation process just remember to research and to try. You’ll never know if you never try. Xoxo
