While I was spending time with the girls tonight I noticed there combs looked dry and maybe chapped????
They are not cracked or bleeding just really dry looking, WHY???

They are only 5 1/2 weeks old. What would make this happen?
Is is bad?
What should I do?

Deep breath!!! You sound very stressed.

I think this is part of the growing process. Just like they shed feathers as they grew, mine seemed to go through a dry-flakey comb stage. They grew out of it in a few weeks, although my RIR still has a dry looking comb. It happened around weeks 5 to 8, I think, and might have been partially caused by the transition from brooder to outdoor coop. Change in humidity, who knows.

Don't do anything. Keep an eye on it in case it gets worse, but I bet you it is just part of growing up.

My chickens are about 15/16 weeks old now and my roosters combs and wattles are always bright, red and healthy looking, but my hen's combs sometimes look a little dry - try rubbing vegetable oil on them.
