Our khaki campbells are 2 years old and look like they are in serious need of a molt. Their feathers look really dry and sad. Is there something we can do to help the condition of their feathers or to encourage them to molt?
Most poultry look pretty ratty this time of year in the northern hemisphere. They will molt when they are ready. Some of mine have started. The molt generally runs from August to December and every bird is on a different timeline. Make sure you are feeding a higher protein feed to help them grow in their feathers more quickly. 18-22% is best.
Mine look awful right now! Hang in there! They will get their winter down and feathers and look like they should when the molt is over. Just make sure they are getting a bit more protein. I feed Flock Raiser and also give a treat of dry cat food and meal worms. They love it! Plus all the foraging they can get. My backyard looks like my kids had a pillow fight and the pillows lost.
