Dry skin on your scalp?

Ok, so there's a 'dry skin on you' thread.. but my concern is a bit different.

I've always had some dandruff, but nothing too un-manageable, but lately with the harsh winters I've noticed it more and more.

When I still used 'normal' shampoos to help with dandruff, like Head & Shoulders and others, I never had good results.

Over a year ago after I started to try more natural health care methods I had heard about using Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar for your hair. I began using this with great results, and I've always had compliments on my hair. But this winter giant flakes of doom have come to attack me. Kind of embarrassing..

So, with commercial hair products as a last resort..

What do you use/recommend for dry scalp/dandruff?

Same thing here but mine was migrating down my face also. I started using Nizoral it is over the counter and seems to be improving my problem when it should be getting worse with winter here

Dry scalp and dandruff are two different things (per a hairdresser I had). She said that dandruff is yellowish with an odor and caused by oils in the scalp, whereas dry scalp is the white flakes and odorless and is caused by..well, dry scalp. Dandruff shampoos won't help dry scalp. I have read that leave-in conditoner and cooler showers will reduce dry scalp (hot showers exacerbate the dryness). While I am fine with the shampoos, I LOVE hot showers...so, mine hasn't gone away.

Mayonnaise.. I'd have to think about that one..

Kip, Thanks for the advice on the Nizoral; I might have to look into that. Right now clinical&chemical type of methods are as a last resort; however I won't throw that out just yet, so thank you.

Barker - thanks for the clarification - I would say my problem is just dry scalp then. My showers are already fairly cold so I can't say much for that.

I might also say that I cut back my hair washing to once a week so that I'm not washing too frequent and making it even dryer, so no, I don't think washing too much is the issue.
I don't stink, I promise!

Another tip I heard, is right along the washing the hair only once a week. I believe it was (again, per a hairdresser tip), don't wash the scalp anymore frequently than 2-3 days and only wash the ends (the part that would be below the bottom of the scull) more than once or twice a week (since they don't get oily much anyway). However, I will add, that I have been following that for a couple years and I still have dry, itchy scalp. Then again, I also have dry, itchy legs and arms!

Teatree oil works good for me. Paul Mitchell makes one with Peppermint in it that really gets the dry skin off, then I follow with Aussie three minute miracle or mane and tail conditioner
