Hello BlueBaby, we are in Gleeson. Southern end of the Dragoon Mtns. We are doing another Barred Rock flock. Had a lot of success with this breed in CO. My main concern now, we decided to convert a metal storage shed to a coop. They will have access to a much larger run during the day that will also provide some shade. Living in the desert does not afford an abundance of shade and I have some concern about the summer and how it may affect egg production. Cutting in ventilation and windows. Night should not be a problem. Done a lot of predator proofing as well, but unfortunately, will not know if I did enough until after the first attack. Any suggestions would be helpful.Hello, and welcome! I'm here in AZ. also! What breed do you have?
Metal can get pretty hot to the touch from the summer sun. Covering the top of the run to protect from any rain and help to give shade is a good thing. I don't free-range mine as there are coyotes, hawks, and owl's around and sometime someone's dog's run loose. My neighbors that did free-range had the flock's all taken. I have Bielefelder's over here, and I just started another hatch going.Hello BlueBaby, we are in Gleeson. Southern end of the Dragoon Mtns. We are doing another Barred Rock flock.
