I'm going to try to create my own dual purpose breed. I know it doesn't happen overnight though. I wanted to start with Cornish roosters...one on a flock of Ancona hens and the other on a flock of RIR hens. I don't know any other breed that would give me the frame for meet like the Cornish. Or if this is really a viable start to a project like this. Any help?

Sounds like an awesome plan! I've always wanted to create my own breed!

Cornish have great meat on them, but they aren't that good at breeding more than a couple hens (I've heard only two or three). You could try a Cornish or a Freedom Ranger (or other hybrid that would breed more hens). There are tons of great breeds to work with out there, Plymouth Rocks, Dorkings, Chanteclers, Brown Leghorns, Sussex, Orpingtons, New Hampshires, and many others.

Best of luck with your project!

Thanks I'll keep those breeds in mind too. I was thinking of only keeping 3 hens per flock anyways. I know that's a small number but it's enough to start with!
