OK. I had OEGB's when I was in 4-H, but you didnt have to dub them since all 4-H birds have to be hatched that year. But a million years later, I am back into chickens and want to show again. What is dubbing exactly and how do I do it? I know it is cutting the comb. By how? And why for showing? I read that it was originally meant to keep the birds from getting their combs ripped off while fighting. Why do they dub them for showing then? And they have to have their wattles cropped? Im so confused about all of this. Can you dub when they are chicks? I would think that that would be less painful than dubbing their large combs when they are older. Luckily, I think mine might all be pullets, but if I get them roo's I will need to figure this out. Do you also have to dub MGB's?

this roo has been dubbed

both the comb and wattles are done. I personally have never done it. I would find someone in your area to show you I think there are you tube videos also

You have to do it for show because it's the breed standard. No you can't do it as chick 8 months or so is common.Yes you have to dub moderns also. You have to remove the wattles comb and ear lobes. It's not that bad and doesn't seem to bother them to much.

here's my old thread... lots of info there... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=5122827

now
i do the towel trick and do it myself... use small scissors for the ears/waddles, and huge titanium scissors for the crest... two cuts on the crest as well... one straight vertical to straighten the back of the crest from where it starts to the top, and then fallow the "dub" line in the crest... put some cornstarch or flour and you're done... put him in a quarantine cage by himself and that's it... after a while, throw some neosporine on it and it will heal up fast...

also, i don't like the snake head look... so i leave some meat under the chin and ears... i just cut off the excess that hangs off... just leave two slits on the waddles... and it heals in 3 days... instead of leaving one huge scab from ear to ear... it might not look best, but it works for me, and i don't expect to get problems with it with the judges...

good luck...

With the bantams I don't even bother with the towel I just pick them up with my left hand and go to work with my right.I use a pair of leather scissors I got from Tandy leather to do it all. with the moderns most judges like the snake head look and short combs. oppose to the taller combs on the Old English.

You could always just show cockerels and hens....

Keep the males "complete" and not have to worry with dubbing, but I figure if you're gonna do a breed, might as well show the sires to your chicks!
