This is one of my four chocolate Runners (have 12 Runners & 2 khaki Campbell's), she may not be the most beautiful but her story has beauty. She is one of 10 ducklings I ordered. All was going good til I moved them to an outside enclosed coop for more room as they were 7 weeks and it was still warm outside (added a lower wattage light in case too chilly). She was a little smaller than the others and they apparently trampled her one night. I found her unable to move, she couldn't bear any weight on her left leg. I quickly put her back in the nursery (added a mirror so she'd think she had company). I had to make a choice whether to cull a partly paralyzed duckling or not. I chose not to at this point and gave her time to heal (if possible). Afterall many years ago, I had to do physical therapy on a kitten partly paralyzed from two strokes in its first 10 weeks. She grew into a beautiful cat but with some walking difficulties but could hop like a rabbit better. So I had to try. The first week was touch and go, she stayed in one position so I had to constantly clean her off (puppy pads worked great with bedding). Week 2, I started doing warm water baths 2x daily, doing massage and gentle stretching of the leg. After several days, she started trying to stand in the water. Hope yet. By week 3 she could stand in water but not on her own yet. In the mean time my girl Kitty (yes, the dog) took a motherly interest in her. I think this helped the duckling recover quicker. By end of week 3, she was trying to stand and could flop a foot or so. Kitty started getting behind and nudging her gently to encourage her to try moving. It helped, after 4 weeks she was returned to the pen during the day while I was there but put in her cage at night since she still had some walking difficulties and struggled to keep up with the rest. After a week, I just left her alone, as time went on, she gained strength and was able to keep up with the others. Now, I can't tell her from the rest unless she's walking.

Kitty mothering the duckling.

One of her first full attempts at walking.

I can only tell her apart from the other 3 chocolate Runners by how her left foot turns in slightly as she walks. She's the top one on the right, next to fence.

I'm so glad I gave her time to heal. She's such a beautiful girl, can't wait for eggs.

Normally, I give all my injured chickens or ducks 1-2 weeks to begin to heal but if they show no improvement and are worse, I will cull them.
