Duck behavior question

My female pekin does it to our male pekin alot. I also figured it was flirting. I only have them 2 and from a very young age the female has gotten "upset" when female CHICKENS came near her man and she would so the head bobbing things then too.

Think of all the uppity girls you have ever known, and imagine them saying, "OH NO you DI'NT!" It's that head bobbing and to the side movement, isn't it?!?!

They're just dissin' the other ducks as they parade themselves for everybody to see how wonderful THEY are.

Its funny how its not until you actually get ducks, that you notice how much body language means and how much they use it!! My girl constantly chats in different tones about different situations and is the biggest tail-wagger... I love her tail wagging! She was also the biggest flirt to my drake too lol

This is the cutest description of duck behavior I've ever heard! Your ducks are beautiful(even if they are a bunch of gossips).

Their running commentary on nothing in particular has definitely endeared them to us. Never thought I'd fall for a bunch of chatty girls, but there you have it.

My son (7) fell in love with ducks watching a flock of them quack on YouTube. He loves the commotion and can't wait until we get our Welsh Harlequins. (Hopefully in the spring!)

Yep, who knew. I fell for the little baby ducklings with their tiny adorable duckling feet. I had no clue they had so much personality.

Every night I tell the ducks "Bedtime!" (maybe several times if they're procrastinating). They amble to their pen, sometimes the boys cuss me out and complain along the way in their cute wimpy boy-quack way. They investigate the clean water and promptly get to mucking it up, but it is generally quiet once they are in. Tonight, however, they were chattering a good long time, but I didn't notice at first as I was re-directing the new turkeys to their proper roosts. But when I went to re-locate Tom Turkey from the top of a duck-house, I realized they weren't gossiping about the interloper. (I was surprised because that sort of offense would usually have Ms. Prissy in a lather and she would let loose the air raid siren quack.) I had put fresh straw in the two duck-houses and this was news unparalleled since man landed on the moon, at least to have ducks talk about it. I'm sure the discussion continued after I went inside because of course they have to do some re-decorating. Mom nevers puts the straw in right; only a duck can do it properly.

I always figured that was what it was...I have yet to see a drake approach a female doing that.

I have three Appleyard Call females that bob their heads and open their mouths at the same time...sometimes pushing the head forward too while the mouth is open. I usually see them do this when they see me coming or I call out to them, and not amongst themselves at a distance. The males do not do this, nor do any other variety of Calls I have, including the chocolate females in with them. Anyone know what they mean by this? They look like they're trying to catch flies, which they can't do with their mouths open for that long! Sometimes they quack in between!

My female calls do that! Like silent wakkks. I mainly see them do it when they are in the pool or in a waterbowl and they do a SUPER sploosh and totally drench me. Then they do like a big silent WAKKKKK. I always thought they were kinda tryin not to laugh! Like the duck way of attempting to cover a guffaw with a cough! One time however (and this fits in with my theory that when ducks show emotion it can be both positive and negative depending on the situation) I ran out of peas and they were so angry that literally words failed them and they silent WAKKKKKed at me lol! They got their peas the next day but boy they were mad!
Here is a picture of Doog in the small paddling pool after having soaked me. Doog is definitely very proud of it and happy and having a good time. Notice the silent wakkkk, Doog's way of going pfffffffffffffffffthahahahahah!
