I wanted to get ducks for awhile now. Planned on hatching them myself. There are lots of different breeds that I like but I made that mistake with the chickens and it is taking a bit to remedy and focus on a few. When I originally decided on the ducks I wanted either calls or east indies. The problem with that is I would like to be able have something that I can eat as well. I want a dual purpose but not a large dual purpose. I would prefer something that would dress out anywhere from 3-5 lbs. The smaller the duck the better. Unfortunately calls and east indies are to small. I had read somewhere that the east indies used to be larger and the perfect size for that but from what I am seeing now they are now the size of calls. If anyone knows of an east indie breeder that has larger sized ducks that would be my first choice. If not I would appreciate ideas from current duck owners about the type and temperment.

Well I really like the black ducks. I am going for eye candy as well. Growing up we had large ducks and to me the weren't cute enough to make up for the mess they made. Right now I am leaning towards welsh harlequins. The Cayuga is a possibility and I think I want to go find some picks of black Swedish. I like Indian runners a lot but haven't heard to much about their potential as far as how they dress out for the table.
