Duck Collars???

I also use the zip ties I have 3 white muscovies and I can't tell them apart except for the color of their ties.

Fish and wildlife departments have numbered collars that they place on Canada geese (and maybe other species) to monitor their territories. At one time the resident flock at one of our parks contained several geese with these collars. don't have a clue as to the source of the collars and must say they were unsightly.

I use colored velcro wraps, with the soft side against the leg. Looks cute, infinitely adjustable, they have been wearing them for seven months and they still look good, haven't lost any color. I like that they are soft and just loose enough to spin around the leg. I trim the excess off, of course.

How do you keep the zip ties from getting too tight? I'm looking for a system to tell some of my ducks apart....

I'm certainly no expert but I wouldn't leave a cat collar on without supervision unless the collar is very easy to break. I believe the duck could hurt itself if the collar became stuck or tangled. Ducks could even get their own bill or feet stuck through the collar and hurt themselves trying to get free.

I've also read that duck bones are somewhat fragile compared to other domestic fowl like chickens. The leg bands I use come off fairly easily. Some of the bands are stronger and more permanent, they must be fitted to the legs more carefully so that they are not too big (and get caught on "things") or too small and hurt the leg.

I never thought to use those! I have several I bought at the dollar store and I bet I can get two leg bands out of each cable wrap. I could even put a number or symbol on the light colors. Thanks for the great idea.

Regarding the zip ties getting too tight, I cut the excess off and then they can't be tightened. I've never had a problem with it, although you do have to cut them off and replace them as the duck grows, just like with anything else.

I think the velcro wraps are a wonderful idea and may try that myself next season--seems like even if they got too tight they wouldn't hurt as much as the zip ties or metal bands.

Thanks for answering my question! I think I'll use zip ties on my ducks, they area already grown up so not a problem to make sure they aren't too tight

Can you use a collar on each of your chicken to tell them apart ?
I don't think it would work they probably have them scratched off in less than 5 mins after being put on, but I see where they are using some kind of collar now to keep roos from crowing so loud. So they don't annoy the neighbors. Who don't like to hear country sounds even though they moved to the country.
