Duck Coop Run

We're in the process of building a coop and run, and have a question (first of many, I'm sure!). If I plan to keep the ducks locked in their coop at night, what type of wire should I use for the run? They will only be in it during the day if they're not wandering in the yard. I was going to use wire fencing then do hardware cloth on the bottom couple fret with an underground apron, but if they'll be put up at night, is that necessary?
