I just posted in the duck section but I never introduced myself. I am currently breeding Australian Spotted ducks because I only have a big backyard for my love of animals. I used to live on acreage where I had horses and raised all types of livestock, poultry, waterfowl, and even exotics. I also used to breed small animals and birds for pet stores but now I just keep my own four dogs, cat, five rabbits, quaker parrot pair, four turtles, bearded dragon, and fish as pets. At one time I had over 200 small animals but it got to be too much to keep up with so many mouths to feed and clean up after so I cut back on everything. It is easy for me to get carried away with my love for living things. Now I garden and raise ducks to keep the bugs and slugs out of my yard (I live in the Pacific Northwest where slugs and snails make great duck food). I joined this site hoping to meet other breeders of Australian Spotted ducks but I have experience with chickens, etc., that I can share as well.

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined BYC

Never owned ducks but think they are the cutest creatures ever.

Best wishes finding other Aussie duck fanciers

So, today we added 5 chicks to our family. They are what the hatchery calls Araucana but apparently that makes them Easter Egger. They seem to be the same chickens I used to raise years ago so I am excited to have colorful chickens that lay colorful eggs. It seems the only way I can be sure to get the chickens the hatcheries call Araucana is to buy them from feed stores and not individuals since they seem to be mutt chickens without a written set of standards. I just like the chickens and the colorful eggs so I am happy I found some chicks and will have chickens again.

We had added another six chicks, Ameraucana this time, to the original five chicks and it turns out one of the new ones is a rooster so that will give me ten hens and a rooster. I moved them out to the coop yesterday and they seem happy in their larger space. I am happy to have them out of the house. They have a heat lamp since they are not completely feathered yet but I think they will feather in more quickly now that they are not so warm in the house.

I also hatched my first two clutches of Australian Spotted ducklings in the incubator with another batch due this weekend and I have five hens sitting on eggs in the yard. The first group has already left to their new home and the second group will hopefully have a home soon. I may keep one because it is a lighter color than the rest and I am curious what it will look like as it gets older. I have greenhead ducks but I wonder if it is possible to get another color. The ducklings had their first bath today at one day old and they did so well I will let them swim in slightly deeper water tomorrow.
