Hi there,
I live in Greensboro NC and am the proud owner of a gorgeous white Pekin Duck. We recently bought this house in late June and inherited a duck as the previous owners had no other option. With us being animal lovers we accepted her into our home. Well our yard. We don't know anything about ducks but are slowly learning. Once we learned that she loves peas we are nurturing a fast friend. Her previous owners said she did not like to be pet and although her name was Aflac she only answered to duck duck. We decided her name is duck duck since my husband used to be in insurance we couldn't do aflac. We were only told she would eat from our hand, and that took about a week, now however if we are giving her peas she will allow us to stroke her back. Also now that we have kept her from being eaten by our middle aged "boxerish" and baby Rottweiler we plan to find her a new friend. Apparently she had a mate that was killed a few months before we bought the house. A drake Mallard. We are in search of a female Cayuga and are in hopes that we found one incubating on craigslist. I came to this site since everytime I have searched online for duck questions it brings me here!! Hopefully I can get some advice and help!!

Duck Duck will come around- it just takes awhile. As far as getting a companion duck for her, you would do best to post on the "Duck thread," for advice on that first. They would know best if you should attempt to get one her age or younger. Getting a companion doesn't mean it will be match made in heaven. Either the oldie or the newbie generally end up getting bullied or attacked, so I suggest you heed experienced dog folks' opinions.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I'm glad you are enjoying Duck Duck. In addition to the duck forum (which is great for asking questions), there are articles in the Learning Center on raising ducks.

To find her a companion, it might be helpful to check in with your state thread. Someone close by may have ducks for sale:

Just a word of caution about Craigslist...it's not always the best place to find healthy animals or knowledgeable sellers (this is based on my own experience so take it for what it's worth).

I hope all goes well for you and Duck Duck, good luck!

Thanks for joining us!
