Duck Eats Everything!

Will he be aggressive with a younger duckling? We have wanted to get another, but haven’t been able to find one his age and don’t want any issues with aggression. We wanted to get him a friend since we got him he was the only one left and by the time they got more he was already a lot bigger than the others.

all ducks/chickens will not like new flock members for a couple weeks. 2 weeks of seeing but not touching, and once they are fully introduced i guarantee he will be so much happier!

My ducklings also picked up everything with their mouths. I think it is normal baby behavior as I have observed it in birds, humans, puppies, and kittens.

My ducklings repeatedly tasted EVERYTHING, including poop. And they were very attracted to shiny things like zippers. We regularly get reports of ducks ingestion metal objects and dying, so it is important to keep a duckling proof environment. Other things to watch out for are poisonous plants, sharp things, things that could cause impaction (like sand), and spoiled/moldy feed.

Haha same! I’m also terrified about the males penis getting stuck or them seriously injuring or even killing my chickens by trying to mate! We don’t know for sure If he’s a drake or not but he hasn’t started quacking yet which makes my husband to lean more towards a male then a female and this makes the fear of that more. Is that common? Since you have ducks have you experienced this? We do have a separate house and run for him because of this. I do put him in the run with the chickens but never leave him in there unsupervised because of this or any aggression that may happen.

I have had cayuga ducks, and yours is too young to tell the gender in my experience. Mine didn't start quacking until a couple months older than yours, though some quack earlier.

It seems that when drakes were exposed to chickens earlier in life they are even more likely to have some species confusion and mate with chickens. It doesn't feel acceptable to risk putting a chicken through that to me.

Makes sense to me! Thank you so much! So glad I do have a separate place for him then. Also will be looking for a friend for him, but keeping him in a separate area from a new duck will be a little difficult considering I only have 2 runs and houses. If I can come across another duck sooner than later I can keep them in separate brooders indoors till my Cayuga gets to be outside permanently. I do have a dog cage I can keep the other duck in inside the run for them to get used to each other in the same outdoor area? I just like to make sure everything will work and be okay before I just go get another duck and have a disaster! Thank you!
