I just came home from school. I go check on my duck eggs, and my broody is off her nest. Probably for her lunch break. I go to the duck eggs, and look at them. One looks cracked, so I picked it up and looked at it. Sure enough, it's cracked. It also has a hole at one end!! The pipping end! But this isn't a pip! I'm so worried.. I don't know what day this is, since I never thought one of my chickens would go broody so soon after laying, but one did anyway. I assume it's around day 20- 27, they are pekin duck eggs. Those three eggs have made it this far out of 4, and I'm excited since it's my first broody hatch. But do you think that duckling will live since it has the crack in it?! It's not a pip, I'm sure. The hole is just big enough for me to peep into, and the duckling did not internally pip. I can see the membrane moving though, which means the duckling inside is still alive. I would cover the hole up with some wax, but the crack is a hole! I'm so worried. Could one of the chickens have pecked at the egg when the broody was off her nest? Could the broody of pecked at her egg? Please, somebody.. HELP!! Is there any way that I could patch the hole?! Or should I leave it?! How did this happen?!
