Hello and first of all sorry for my not good English language.
The story is very very long...
I have a problem with one of my ducks.Female,Mallard,8 years old,weight-2,330kg.The duck had problems with egg yolk peritonitis for maybe 2-3-4years till now,but the problems are not quite big.
The condition was worsening maybe for 2 times in the year, mostly at springs with penguin-like
walking and some soft-shelled or not-shelled eggs. After 10days treatment with oxytetracycline
the condition improves and everything was well. The reason for it is maybe and the old
age of the bird. She lays maybe only 2-3eggs monthly, some of them are layed, some of them stayed
in the bird and the body resorbed them without cousing any problems.
It was not needed to give her oxytetracicline from march 2024.Before 1year appeared and
some kind of hunched position of the tail, which is still present till now,but last winter it
got better for some months.Maybe it is due to some kind of nerve damage from EYP.
The problems worsened before 13-14days.I think that the problems are because I have added 2 big
cayuga drakes, that are very agressive, very big and very sexually active. There are many
females, but sometimes they mate with one and the same female for 10-15times daily, even
sometimes the two drakes try to climb the female simultaneously.I think that they maybe
moved something in her anatomy and worsened the condition. Now I have separated the bird from this drakes, but the harm is already done.
So before 13-14days the appetite of the bird worsened, she began again to walk like penguin and
was trying to lay something unsuccesfuly. On the next day the vent and (maybe I am not sure and
very familiar with birds anatomy)the oviduct prolapsed with lots of blood. The inner parts that are
outside the bird was with the size of kids fist or even bigger.I had not found emergency veterinarian
for maybe 6-7-8hours,but at the end founded and the internal parts are
desinfected and replaced on their places, the vent was sewn and was prescribed therapy with
linkomycine and spectinomycine on intramuscle injections for 7days.The condition improves very
quickly, till now 13-14 days later there are not any problems with egg yolk peritonitis. The
stitches from the vent haven't been removed yet,it is planed to be done this saturday, but I will
negotiate with the veterinarian to be done even later, maybe after 1-2weeks if it is not a problem.
It was used bag stich.
But there was other kind of complication. The feathers of bird was very dirty with blood and
egg content, because she stayed for 7hours with prolapsed vent. The vet cleaned and desinfected
them but 2days after appeared big wound infested with maggots/worms on the birds back between
two wings.2 baths with cypermetrin,2 days spaying the wound with oxytetracycline+cypermetrin spray and everything was fine. Now I am spreading silver sulfadiazine on the wound twice a day.
The bird was outside for 5hours daily and rest of the time is isolated in the dark room to try
to reduce ovarial activity.Everything with the bird is fine, she have good appetite, she is walking
without penguin-like walking, she is not trying to lay something and etc.
Till now she is not started to molt.
As a preventative measure, I would like to have an suprelorin implant placed on her.So my
questions are addressed to everyone using this implants.
My first question is-local anesthetic will be enough for duck?
My second question is-will be 4.7mg implant enough? Here in our country is not easy to find
bigger (9.4mg)implant.I think that maybe one implant now and one in the early spring 2026 will
be enough.Because after 30-60days the birds here will start to molt naturally, autumn is comming.
After it comes the winter, the winter here is harsh so even the young females do not lay eggs from
december to february. At the next spring she will be 8 and half years old so I think that she
will not have and quite big ovarial activity. So I think that one 4.7mg implant now and one at
the early spring will be enough maybe. How do You think?
