Hello! Posting for a friend here in San Antonio. She found a mallard couple and their nest in her backyard. She is concerned that her dog will get to the nest despite efforts to block it off and is looking for someone to take the eggs.

Unless the mallards are domestic I believe the eggs are protected by the migratory bird treaty act.

Perhaps your friend can keep her dog on a leash? We had ducklings on our pond last spring. We avoided the pond and had our dog on a leash.

Alternatively you can contact a wildlife rehabber who can legally handle wild mallards.

She contacted Texas Parks & Wildlife and they told her that they don't believe these birds to be wild mallards, and so they are not protected, and thus are able to be removed.
