Just thought I would tell everyone, I have 7 duck eggs under a broody chicken, they have been under her for exactly 20 days. I'm guessing they will hatch from September 6th to the 11th. They are khaki campbell ducklings. This is my first time hatching ducks so anything I should know? I know it's a little late for help. I have candled all of them and I discarded a few that weren't growing or infertile. They just started turning pitch black, which I know happens from day 17-20. They all have veins, I am pretty excited!

Good luck. May all seven hatch.

Excited for you! Please keep us posted.Hatch should happen around September 11.

One of the eggs has been cracked since Sunday, the crack got bigger. But now it has stopped, I'm afraid it either died or the crack was from the chicken (brooding them) hitting it.

I hope it still has a chance.

I checked the eggs today and the one with the crack had a horrible smell. I candled it and it didn't seem to promising. I went with my gut, hoping it wasn't alive and I opened the egg, it smelt horrible and some yellowish goop got on my fingers, I washed my hands and the stench won't go away. But sadly the duck was dead.

I'm glad you got that out when you did and I would have responded sooner if I could have. Cracked eggs at that stage are a problem, and nothing good is going to come out of them. I've had some success with waxing eggs that have small, early cracks I caught right away, but one left for any time at all isn't going to work out well.

Good job in catching and removing that one! It could have ruined the rest of your eggs.

Ok Thanks! This is my first time doing this so I wasn't sure if I should or not.

And you did the right thing even not being sure. If an egg is bad, remove it, always. Do not depend on the duck to do that. I've heard that chickens will evict eggs from their nest if they don't have viable embryos, and I have no idea if that's true of chickens. I can tell you for sure it's not true of ducks. Ducks sometimes will, sometimes won't, and a spoiled one can ruin the entire clutch.

Can't wait to hear how your other babies come out and see pics!
