Does anyone have pictures of what frostbite looks like on ducks as it progresses? I've only been able to find pictures of severe frostbite and I want to know what it looks like before it gets to that point so I can avoid that.

Also is there anyway to prevent frostbite?

I am not sure what it looks like but it has been -25 deg F wind chills (-9 reg temps) here the past couple days and my ducks have been outside during the day. At night they walk to their coop.

They do not walk around much that's for sure. I have wood chips on the ground they walk on and a tree line they take cover in. I planned to put some straw or pine shavings down on the ground for them to bed in.

How cold does it get by you? Duck are VERY cold hardy.

It really depends on the year, I'm in Wisconsin. Last year it was really warm but in years past its gotten down to -40. It's been around -8 or -9 the past couple days

I am northcentral WI. I get it. One year it is 30 deg all winter the next it is 4 ft of snow and -30 for a few weeks. (lets hope NOT this year)

I do not have call ducks, I have just regular farm ducks I raised in spring. (I do no have a farm though) I Just keep their coop floor FULL of straw, straw bales stacked in the coop for insulation. My ducks don't let me pick them up unless I grab them.

Have you noticed any issue or just keeping an eye out?

It usually looks like blackening at the tip, then progresses from there. The black is dead tissue.

I try to avoid it by making sure their coop bedding is dry and clean as well as spreading fresh shavings or straw on the ground for them to walk on. Doesn't always work, I had one duck lose his toes over the last winter but he didn't let that bother him once he healed.

Frostnip- Where the skins surface turns very red and purple.

Superficial frostbite- The skin turns white losing color to the point the skin can look gray.

Deep frostbite- The skin turns black.

I haven't noticed anything yet, although I don't know what to look for since it's my first year having ducks
