I have a 3-4 week old Khaki Campbell duck and it’s starting to get its feathers. Can I tell if it’s a hen from its current feathers? it looks like a hen but again I know feather colors/patterns change as they grow. Here is a picture of its current feathers.

Your duck is a female.

Many people seem to think that female like first feathers mean you have a girl but that is not true. All Mallard derived breeds, like Khaki Campbells, start out with feathers like that. The best way I know to tell is to look at the new feathers right above the tail (which your picture does not show). If you look at my ducks below, you can see that the male has dark, solid colored feathers above the tail but the female has lighter, two colored feathers. Also, males legs will be getting more and more orange and his beak will be changing to greenish, but it is a little early to tell that. Girls will start quacking really loud about this age too (males do not quack but make a raspy, horse sound).

Is your duck loud or kinda of low soft noise maker? All my females are loud my drakes sound like they are wisphering.

We have 2 Cayuga and 1 Rouen. Two of the three ducks quack like crazy and the third just sort of seems to almost whistle. Definitely not a quack like the other two. Wondering if the quiet one may be a drake? Not old enough to have feathers curling yet.
