hi, I have a pekin duck who's about 2 months old.
My great grandma died recently and we had to take a one week trip to florida, when we did I left my duck in the care of my stepdad.
when we returned I noticed a gaping wound that almost completely wraps around his rump. I talked to my stepdad abt it and he said tht he hadnt known what happened, we're assuming he was attacked by either a hawk or a dog, we cant really tell.
(sorry for the low quality photos, those were the best I could get)
Anyway, the attack happened about two or three days before we returned and I'm worried tht infection has started setting in. my mom talked to a lady who raises ducks and she gave her some medicine but I'm starting to think that we may need to take her to the vet. I've never had this happen with my ducks and I'm not sure what to do 100%, any advice would help.

Welcome to BYC. Sorry to hear about your duck.

If you can take her to a vet, I would suggest doing so. If you can't, please follow these instructions,

Trim some of the feathers around the wound, take a few pictures for us, then flush the wound copiously with some saline, or plain water. After doing so, I would apply an antibacterial ointment to the wound like Neosporin or Prep H. You'll want to keep her inside, in a warm stressful free area with feed and water provided. I would start weighing her daily on a food scale, as well as paying close attention to her poops, looking for any abnormalities.

A vet would be preferred because one, the wound might have occurred a few days ago, so infection may be setting in, the other problem I see is the oil gland looks to be lost or damaged, which can subsequently lead to life-long wet feather, and inability to swim in water which may then cause a load of other problems.

I cleaned it out as soon as I noticed it, and I've cleaned it out once or twice today. she has a secure place on our porch that we clean everyday

thank you for the advice, its greatly appreciated. were currently raising some money to take him to the vet which we should be able to do by at the longest the end of the week. I'll post better pictures soon.
