Is it possible? My little black call duck is broody, and means business. I don't have a mature drake right now. Hence duck eggs are sterile for sure. While she was watching, (after she attacked me.

) I took the 5 ducks eggs away, and I gave her 5 chicken eggs.
She immediately took them over, and continued hissing at me.
She's not a "Quality" call, so she's actually larger than a normal call duck. She covers those 5 eggs just fine.
Even if they don't hatch, at least they have a chance.

I've seen people hatch duck eggs under chickens, will it work the other way?

She wants to be a mom in the worst way.

Don't mess with momma!

Well I've had several chicken's hatch duck and turkey egg's.The problem with ducks hatching non waterfowl is the chick's will get wet and most likely die.I had a couple cochin hen's hatch ducks, and a frizzle hatched a turkey egg, but usualy brooded them a couple day's after they hatched. The turkey done great under the frizzle hen.Waterfowl are very messy and damp and most chick's etc. cannot stand up to it.She's a good looking duck but even with all chicken egg's I dunno maybe someone else here has had a good success with ducks raising chicken's.

If they hatch, I definitely plan on brooding the chicks myself.
I can always try to keep on top of putting dry bedding in there after a rain to make sure the nest is dry???

Cute bird. If she is determined, you might as well let her. They say calls with pigment in their beaks, like yours, make the best layers and hens. I've hatch call ducks under chickens but never the other way around. Some calls are said to make good broodies, others not so much so. Time will tell. She seems content and diligent.

She's a great layer. Other than winter time, both her and my runner lay everyday.
They both started back up on the same day, and haven't missed one yet. She even laid one this morning. My runner's egg was in there too. She had added them to her clutch. Boy was she mad when I took the 2 duck eggs.

If anyone is following this thread, just wanted to give an update. I candled the chicken eggs under my call last night.
There is definite development!!!

I could see veins, and the shadow where the embryo is. On top of that, I think I saw movement in the one.

I'm excited!!!

Oh, one egg did end up broken, she still has 4.

She's going to make a GREAT incubator for my Runner eggs next year.
