hey guys new here

I started hatching ducks for the first time this year and im on my second batch. The first batch wen't beautifly i got a 95% hatch rate but now my second batch has started hatching. Heres the problem. When i checked this morning there was only one that had piped so i left for about 5 hours and came home to a very messy incubator. There is yoke all in the bottom from one duckling that has piped and almost gotten his entire bill out in the span of about 4 hourss. It cant tell very well yet but it doesnt look like any of the other hatchlings ive watched.

It is moving and churping but my question is why did that much yoke run out of the egg? What causes this and whats going to happen to the duckling what should i do? Thanks

While trying to hatch they do move around a lot even though they have a pretty tight space in the egg. It can happen though that the yolk does get broken- it sounds like this has happened in your case- sadly the risk of infection is now extremely high for this little duckling - but also so is the risk of it drowning in the yolk. I have had this happen twice- once the duckling survived to hatch once it didnt. You may need to gently remove some shell and let some if the yolk drain out of the egg to ensure the duckling doesnt drown- but also once hatched it will need to be offered food fairly soon since it wont have the yolk sustaining it. You will also need to keep a very close eye on the umbilical area to watch for any sign of infection. You may see signs of redness there- but most likely infection may be internal - My fingers are crossed for your little one- good luck with it.

I agree with duckyfromoz.

Good luck with the hatch and let us know how the little one fares.
