Long story short, Pekin drake mated Mallard hen. Been using neosporin on skin and tetramycin on eye area. Her eyelids are growing closed. A vet is not an option, none in my area see birds. Any advice? She eats, drinks, and poops normally.

Welcome To BYC

Does she seem to be able to see out of the eye?
With damage like that, the eye may be lost. I'm not sure what else you can do but keep it cleaned with saline and put the Terramycin in the eye.

I'll tag in some Duck Folks to see if they have any other suggestions. @Isaac 0 @Miss Lydia

Before it sealed up so much, the eye looked ok. I’m not sure now. She seems not to see out of it.

Oh my gosh boy he must have worked on her a long time. Is this only one mating or over many times? it's going to take some time to get over this, what your doing sounds good besides keeping her away from your drake. You can use warm washcloths[compress] on the eyes and then put the Terramycin in the eyes. Hopefully once she recovers her sight will be okay. They are amazing how they can recover from some pretty bad abuse. The fact that she is eating drinking and pooping fine lets you know she is on the mend. Just shower her with TLC.

She’s staying in the bathtub right now. I also gave her amoxicillin for 4 days. I also close off the Pekins at night. When she mends more, I will put her and the other Mallard female together. Then put the Mallard drakes in a few days later. Everything but her eye is healing well. Should I try to open her eyelid?

The matings we’re going on for about a week, it was just a patch of feathers off her neck….then this. I also gave her amoxicillin for 4 days. Everything seems to be healing well. Should I try to open her eyelid? She is staying in the bathtub now. When she heals more, I will put her with the other Mallard hen. Then reintroduce the Mallard drakes. The Pekins get shut up at night now.

I’d do warm compresses and see if she opens it on her own. The warm compress will make it feel better to. You could even use by warm salty water ring out the wash cloth so it’s not dripping and just hold it on her eye till it cools. Then use the Terramycin. That might be all you need do to get her to open her eye.
