Our duck house is wooden with a layer of hay. A whole side opens up to clean. We replace the hay every day. But it is attracting black flies. Is there anything we can do to prevent it from attracting flies?

Your ducks don't eat the flies? Our ducks will snatch the flies from the air. I have read of some homemade sprays which repel flies, you could try that.

Do you mean blackflies? Or flies, more like house flies?

For the slightly larger flies, the ones drawn to manure, we use a combination of fly traps and fly predators, and that works pretty well.

Oh, and the Little Tree car air fresheners - vanilla scent. I use that near the door of the night pen to discourage flies. Also seems to work.

I apply food grade DE or Diatomaceous Earth every week inside the duck coop, around it and put it in their food too. It works on anything with an exoskeleton and flies! It's not instantaneous, in fact, it takes a while to work. But it is all natural and won't hurt you or the birds. I put it in my garden too. Only warning is that it is not good for us to inhale it so wear a mask when spreading.
