Duck Houses

I love the house! Here I use an igloo dog house, a recycled kids playhouse, and I also have a stall in the barn for my ducks. Backing up to the flooring, I say sand I have done bare dirt and bare dirt plus straw.... Don't don't don't do that. It is disgusting and never dries out and smells to high heaven. I have also done pea gravel, which I liked. Except that eventually that disappeared in the mud. So then I did a layer of landscape fabric, with sand atop that. And I love it.

I'm using sand for the first time here, too. Does it get too cold for them in the winter?

The sand is relatively new here, so i am learning, but yes I think it is colder... But I know last year my flock was out in cold snow plus the wet straw + muddy clay mess, so my theory is they adapt and as long as they have the cozy warm place(s) to get to, it is ok. I did notice the first few days after we added the sand and the temps dropped, the flock seemed like they were spending a lot more time inside their houses. But now they're on the sand just as much as they were on the clay dirt. I really believe the sand has to be way healthier for them than the mud they were in.

What type of plants should I put in my pen so that way my wood ducks feel like they have some cover to hind in? I'm just looking for something to help them feel safe and secure.

Mine have nibbled on the leaves and are still alive and kicking. but I don't have wood ducks see if you can gleen any info here

Pond Creations by Sean in Marlborough. He was super nice and very professional, and he's also really into rocks. (He's got a Facebook page with lots of great photos.) Also, that's about one third the size he wanted to make for us! As much as we love our ducks, there's a limit to how many "accessories" we'll get them A fair fraction of the rocks and the tree stumps actually came from the woods on our yard. (We live 100 yards from the granite state, which is aptly named.) I think we could have done this ourselves, but it would have taken us an entire summer of weekends to make it, whereas Sean knocked that out in two days.

Wow that is quick!!! I like all the rock that's what caught my eye most my 4 acres are COVERED with rocks that need a good home!
