Hi,

Would my ducks be warm enough in an insulated duck house in -30? I would have a heat lap too just in case. What are your tips on keeping ducks in a very cold area?

Thanks!

Ducks, with their thick layer of fat and down, are much more tolerant of the cold than chickens. Last year, when it was -40 with the wind chill, my ducks would be outside swimming in their water dish while the chickens wouldn't get off their roosts.

Having an insulated coop is great, and it's probably all you need. A heat lamp is optional. The only time my ducks wouldn't leave the coop last winter was when it was really windy. Any other time they would be outside sleeping on the snowbanks in their run.

Insulating is a good idea. Not only will it help them stay warm in winter, it keeps them cooler in summer.

When I freaked out during a blizzard last year about the ducks, my hubby put it in perspective...

"Honey, they are made of DOWN!" Relax!"
