Hello everybody,

I've been interested in getting ducks for a while now, but I need to know the proper housing dimensions. I have a 1 1/4 acre pond they will be able to swim on daily, and I plan on getting about 40 laying ducks of different varieties. They'll be let out to range ever morning. My dream duck house is on stilts in about 1 foot of water. Tell me if this isn't smart . Also, curious, can geese be housed with ducks? I'm thinking not, because of the territorial-ness, but just wondering.

Duck housing recommendations are generally the same as chickens depending on the breed (calls vs full sized) which is 2-4 sq ft per duck. If you have 40 laying full sized ducks that is a 160 sq ft of housing. Unless you plan on building more than one house for all of the ducks? A shed would probably be your best bet.
If it is sitting on water, does that mean a pond?

Ok. Yes, the pond I mentioned in my first post.

Maybe do a search for duck housing here on byc. Look through the images. Good luck, I know nothing about building a duck house on a pond. From what I have read regarding pond ducks is that once you release them to the pond, they pretty much do what they want.

My geese can be in with my ducks and chickens in fall and most of winter till breeding season starts in Feb for the geese then they have to go back to their own house. But they actually like sleeping in the same house when hormones are low.
