One of my Khaki Campbell's appears to have been attacked (by a snapping turtle perhaps) since there is a good size open wound on her side in front of her leg (under a wing so I didn't notice it immediately). She is eating and walking although slower. It was bleeding some but not a lot. I've penned her separately. What should I do or put on it? Does she need antibiotics? Please let me know asap.

Clean the wound good you can use warm salty water or veterycin spray if you have it it is for wounds and infection. you going to have to clip the feather back from the wound so when it begins to heal the feathers don't close up in the gap. also your going to have to be very careful flies don't get into the wound and lay eggs maggots isn't something you want to deal with either they can be a killer, so get something like swat or I just say this rec on another thread it's called Prozap screw worm spray. Might be best to keep her inside till the wound closes up just for her protection from flies. Watch the wound for any sign of infection she may need oral antibiotics.

and get rid of the snapper

Okay, thanks for the info. I've got her in the coop and won't let the others in with her for now. I washed the wound out with saline solution and will look for some veterycin spray tomorrow. I have Nolvasan solution which was given to me by a vet for my cats wound. Would that work?

I wasn't sure what Nolvasan was so looked it up and came across this.

I believe the Nolvasan is for cleaning the wounds? and if you read down a ways she tells what part water to mix with it. The Veterycin is a great product because the wound can be sprayed that way your not having to touch the wound directly. TSC carries it. How does it look how deep?

I did speak to a vet and he said that Nolvasan would be okay but then must rinse afterwards. So that is what I did for now but I will look for the Veterycin you suggest. He mentioned I could bring her in for a Baytril shot if I want, so we'll see about that. It looks pretty clean now. It is deep in one spot and a bit larger then a silver dollar over all. There is a chunk of skin missing at the deepest part. It must hurt but she is acting okay.

Sounds like you have done a good job. please keep us updated and keep watch for flies that will be an awful thing to deal with.

The vet visit today went well and he says it should heal up fine. She's lucky it wasn't worse. He put her on Clavamox for a week and I picked up some of the Veterycin. She will have to stay out of the pond for awhile and I'll keep an eye on flies. Right now it's only in the 50's here so the flies aren't too much of a problem but temps are expected to rise next week. We will be hunting for snappers on our 3 acre pond but likely won't be able to eliminate them.
