I have a 5 year old swedish duck named Junior that started limping about a month ago. There were no visible injuries and I couldn't feel any breaks. His vet gave him Metacam for inflammation and he improved some. About 4 days after that was finished, he just stopped walking. I took him back to his vet and got x-rays done. He has a little arthritis starting, but that wasn't the problem. The top bone in one leg showed a shadow in part of it. Best case scenario is that it's an infection in the bone, which can be treated with antibiotics over a 3 month period. Worst case scenario is that it's some type of cancer. The very thinks infection is more likely because it came on suddenly. So now he's in his playpen on pine shavings. He sits in one spot and sleeps most of the time, but still has a good appetite. Vet said to feed him as much as he wants due to weight loss, but I have to put him in front of his food and water to eat.
So here's my question. What else can I do for him that would help him heal? Is there a food supplement that anyone can recommend for weight gain? Does anyone have experience with this?
