We have two buff orpington ducks about 6+ months old. Both have been laying for a couple of months, very well too. They get Kalmbach's Flock Maker with nutritional yeast mixed in, Poultry Cell in their house water bucket about once a week, and large oyster shell.

Yesterday, this middle egg, more than double the size of their normal eggs, was in the nest. No blood, but it has calcium deposits on it.
Left is a normal duck egg, the cyborg egg, and a silkie egg.

We don't know which one, but this morning, one made a new, separate nest from the big one they both use, and she stayed in today, appearing to be sleeping. Otherwise, they free range.

Has anyone ever seen such a thing? Does she now have an issue?

The only other weird thing was about two weeks ago, I found one egg in their pool, and this beside the pool.

I just ignored it, thinking it was a fluke. We've not seen anything else strange with them or their eggs.

I can't imagine why she didn't rupture something to lay huge of an egg.

We're new to ducks this year. Thanks in advance!

What is their feed and how do you supplement their calcium? If you use oyster shells on the side what kind of oyster shells crushed or flaked ? do you ever give them back their own shells after cleaning drying, baking and crushing?

The oyster shell is huge pieces from the buckets I get from Chewy. I give the big chunks to them, and the rest is for the chickens. I put it in a pile near their water bucket, and they clean it up in a few days.

Have you ever seen such a giant egg from one of your ducks, Jen? I've seen, on occassion, a hen lay a bit larger one, but nothing like this which is more than double. I'm surprised she didn't die laying it. She's running around the yard like usual. I checked for blood and nothing.

Yes lol I have. Only a few in a decade though. I was more concerned about the rubbery egg with the tail I have seen those also and that’s when I get out my calcium gluconate and give one ML to the duck who did it. IF IF IF I can figure out which one it was. lol

Oh, whew, you took the stress away from both my hubby and me as we were so worried she might have torn her insides up to lay that. Thank you, Jen!

Yeah, that other thing, we've only seen that one time, a couple of weeks ago. I ran to see if they'd eaten all of their oyster shell, and they had, but only would have gone a day or two at most without it. Being on the All Flock, I knew they'd need it, though, so I have been supplying it. I just have to be sure there is always some there for them. Maybe we'll fix up some type of container to put it in next to their feeders, so I can stop just putting it in a pile on the ground.
