Are you really wanting pekins or KC? I don't have muscovies so I can't say much about them. You could always see about ordering exactly what you want and getting a few or all sexed.

My original duck choice was Khaki Campbells, and since hanging out here I've decided I really like pekins a lot. So the variety isn't as important. The reason I originally chose muscovies is that they're quiet. lol

It's t duck math fun? It sucks when you hit your max though, lol! I would get what you really want. Muscovies are suppose to be very sweet and most pet like and are quiet. If eggs are important I would get some some KC and pekins are also good meat birds.

It looks like Murdoch's here has KC,Pekins, and Cayugas on their roster. I have to check and see what they have in at the moment.

Aaaannddd... nobody will have ducks in until at least the first of March.

I have that long (at least) to wait. TSC gets them in around the 1st of March, Murdoch's won't get them for another 3 weeks, and our little co-op won't get them until right before Easter.

Back to waiting.

Those of us who want ducks this year might consider the after-Easter dumping of ducks - it begins a month or two after Easter, people don't want the ducklings that were so cute a few weeks ago. So shelters and vets and public ponds are places to consider either doing a rescue or adopting rescued ducks and ducklings.

I finally made a decision.

Rather than deal with unwanted drakes and needing to re-home them (and losing out on a year of egg laying), I just ordered sexed ducks from Metzer Farms. 1 Cayuga drake, 1 Pekin duck, and 4 Khaki Campbell ducks. I'm cancelling the straight run order of Muscovies.

Now I get the ducks I want, in the sex I want, and not have too many ducks. PLUS I get the drake of my choice! I really wanted at least one Cayuga, they're so pretty!

They're shipping out March 16th, so I don't have to wait too long, either.

Cool! I really think that is the best way to go if want specific breeds that way you don't get "stuck" trying to find homes for some. Mine came from Metzer and I've been really happy with them and that isn't very far away at all. Just enough time to get everything ready. You can always add muscovies later on too so it's not like you can never get them.

I've already been promised that when we move to a larger property I can have more ducks, and I'll get some muscovies then.
