duck nest question

I use clean straw in my nest boxes. It's less likely to get or already contain mold than hay and the ducks seem to love it. Although, I have had ducks scratch out a nest in leaf litter under a tree, or pine needles under my spruce tree. And a couple of them have occasionally scratched out a nest in gravel under some shrubs I have. I think it's more about feeling safe than material.

mine are on acerage but they can go in the coop too. They seem to go for the empty 55 gal. drums in the field and bring in wood and feathers. I put shaving in them and they push them out. In the coop they dig a hole and nest under my wall boxes. I have dog houses with shaving and sometime they use them.
