Duck nest

I have a pair of Pekins and heard they just drop eggs where they are. Also if they make a nest does that mean they might get broody too?

Some pekins will make nests but just never sit or only sit for a few days. It really depends on the individual.

Most ducks when they first start to lay will lay their eggs just about anywhere from the pool to on the ground just were ever the urge takes them, and yes sometimes when they build a nest they go broody best way to find out is when she starts to lay her eggs in the nest leave them alone and she what she does, she may not go broody as soon as she starts to lay but she may soon after. If she starts laying in the nest but after a few weeks of laying doesn't start to brood best remove the eggs so you don't have an explosion. And

Fufa, our pekin, has been broody for at least a good week or 2. Her and daisy would both sit on the nest of 17 eggs but in the last 30 hrs, its only been Fufa. I have a little bowl if food and water i keep filled right beside her so she eats and drinks without getting up. I was watching her this morning and she keeps putting wood chips on her back. Lol (her nest is in my front bushes) is that normal? This is her 1st time and i was wondering what if non of the eggs hatch?. I candled them 3 days ago when she finally got up for a few and i only see 1 egg that looks like something. Everything else looked like normal eggs. Im hoping to check that egg again if she ever gets off her nest again. I figure if it still looks the same its a dead one :( then what? Do i just let her sit on bad eggs or leave em till they all explode? Im not quite sure cause if i remove them, she'll start laying somewhere else and i dont want that. Any advise?

Ducks are definately interesting. I wish I knew more to answer your questions. Ive only had ducks for 5 months. started with 12 and only got 2 left. Im a beginner, whos stumbling thru raising them. 2 died from being shipped, dog got 1, and racoons took the rest in one night. Mine made a nest under a planter. Havent seen them even near it since they made it. I was just hoping that since they made a nest, theyll start laying now.

It's not a good idea to let a duck nest outside with out adequate protection from predators, you know the phrase "Sitting Ducks"? well that is what she is right now. If you move her she probably won't continue to sit but you may go out to check on her one morning and she and her eggs will be gone. If it was my duck I'd take the eggs and destroy the nest so she doesn't keep laying there, make a nice place for her inside her house, with shavings or straw what ever you prefer and make it so she can have some privacy and maybe she'll lay inside where she will be safe. if you think the one egg is viable you could always place it inside in the cozy nest you make for her and see if she'll sit on it. worth a try.

I live in a small little community town and predators arent a problem here. They roam free in the yard and sometimes in my neighbors yard but they dont mind. (I asked to be sure) if she hatches any ducks then ill definitely bring the babies in till theyre a little older just because we do have owls around. I hear them hoo. I think theres one a few houses down from us but my ducks have never had any problems with predators since ive got them and that was back in March. (Knock on wood)
