We’ve got a duck sitting on eggs in the sandpit and when she gets up she buries them in the sand. Does she do this to keep them warm or to protect them against predators? Or something else?

Hmm. None of my ducks (all runners) have ever done this.

However, my American Buff geese regularly bury their eggs in piles of straw before they wander off to eat. I've always thought they are trying to hide them from predators -- or the crazy woman who steals all of their eggs.
