One of my 22 week old mallards hopped into the pool after I cleaned it today and lay herself flat on the water with her tail up. My Rouen drake jumps in and just looks at her, has a bath and leaves...silly boy. He jumps back in a couple of minutes later, mounts her, no fuss. I was watching closely because I have been worried about this big lug drowning my petite mallard! It was no problem at all. They both jump out looking rather smug. Now my Rouen hen and other 2 mallard hens are in there and they all have hold of each others necks in a circle and are trying to mount each other!!!!! And making these different deep throated kind of quacks, nothing I have heard before. I almost split a gut laughing!
So does this mean she might start laying soon? I know they lay without a drake around, but I think I heard that once they have mated, they start laying pretty soon after?
Wish I'd had my camera.
