I just need to know if this is normal. One of my ducks is panting a lot. She has recently started laying. Also, our weather is getting pretty hot. It's 90° out, currently. And she is panting quite a lot. Bill wide open, panting like a dog. My other duck isn't panting. They have plenty of shade and water, and are currently camping out under the drip from a window unit air conditioner. They have a two and half foot deep pond available to them at all times, but during mid day, it is in a sunny location, so they've been only swimming early and late in the afternoon. But they have other water available for dunking their heads and drinking.

I probably should point out that she has had a slight limp for about two weeks now. It's only slight, and doesn't keep her from getting around or in her pond. I think she may have injured her hip or leg getting out of her pond or something. I have examined it and see no signs of sores, swellings, injuries, or particularly sore spots, so I've been just watching to see how things go. But this panting concerns me, as the other duck isn't panting.

Normal due to the temps now, or a sign of illness?
I tried to post a video.
She is able to quack, walk, move around, and is eating and drinking, and laying. And she closes her bill occasionally, but it pops right back open in a wide pant.

I am newer to ducks myself, so I'm not the best person to answer your question. That being said, my ducks and geese pant from time to time. Hope that helps.

They will definitely pant when too hot. Heat mixed with humidity can be a bit much for them. So be sure she has access to clean cool water (close by especially if shes having issues walking). Shade is essential too to ensure she doesn't overheat.

Panting can also be a sign of stress. Which can be from her being hot, her injury, predators, etc

You can try freezing water bottles and old milk jugs filled with water for her to lay on/next to. It will help cool her down.

The kind of severe, full open mouth panting that you're describing is unusual. I have temps 100+ for days in a row where I live. When my girls are overheated they pant on occasion (not constantly with every breath) it was accompanied by ruffled feathers, and with wings held slightly out to the sides of the body to increase air flow. This was even true for their first summer when they wouldn't have really adjusted to our climate yet. My Cayuga struggles more with heat as she's black, but even then I've rarely seen her pant.

What you're describing sounds more like stress or illness. Is there anything in the pond that could've injured her leg/stressed her out? If you're thinking it's heat you can freeze 16oz water bottles and float them in the brimming bins, 2 litre frozen bottles in the pond....but I really don't think heat is the issue.

All my Ducks pant when its warm out...I keep multiple water stations set up around my yard...Large livestock bowl, ice cream pails and the kiddie pool...I add fresh cold water when needed.....I wet the ground in shaded areas and they love laying in the cool wet grass....
As long as your Duck is still eating I dont think its sick.....

She stopped panting after a while. I think she is working harder than the other duck, being that she is lame. I checked her leg over again, and can't find anything visibly wrong. She doesn't flinch in pain while I'm looking it over. But she definitely tries not to put weight on her right leg, and consequently flutters her wings quite frequently, for balance. I'm thinking she needs a couple days recuperating in the pen, instead of walking up and down this rocky hill, in the heat.

i have two pekin ducks that are both 2 weeks old without any feathers. they are currently sitting in my house where it is 74 degrees, and one of them is somehow panting. i dont know how she is possibly hot. water is ALWAYS within 5 feet from them and theyve been indoors for a few hours now.
