Duck pond ideas

Our solution was a small pond 8x10 with a bottom drain so we can empty it easily. We do it every week or 2.

You mentioned rock along the bottom. In my experience, it's been helpful having a smooth bottom to make it easier to clean. I think the rock would just collect solids.

I wish we had made the walls wider, to have more stable surface area for decorative rock and such.

If you do a little hole in the bottom and fit a pvc pipe in there, you can bury a pipe and drain it out to an area further away really easily. It's all easy to do by hand.

I often wonder if people who dig ponds have irrigation through an open ditch water system. I have never seen a thread that anyone else has ever used a ditch in their pen. If you have open ditch (not round pipe that goes through the property) I highly suggest making use of it. I have incorporated 25ft of open ditch in my duck pen (runs from mid April to Mid October), so that I don't have to deal with a pond/filtration/cleaning, etc. Because of this ditch I literally have never cleaned my duck pen other than spraying their poop into the grass (great fertilizer) in their area 2-3 times a week to make sure my pen never smells. It's almost like I don't have ducks for 6 months out of the year because I have zero upkeep with them due to the ditch. I will use kiddie pools this summer (strategically placed over the ditch) with a drain in the bottom that goes right into my ditch for easy cleaning. Just an idea in case you do have irrigation that is usable.

I got a pond from Home Depot. https://www.homedepot.com/p/MacCourt-Aruba-50-Gal-Preformed-Pond-Liner-LP5718/308771371 Installed an automatic filler (not a requirement) and pump it out periodically with a cheap pump from Harbor freight https://www.harborfreight.com/search?q=1/6hp pump to my garden. Working well so far. The ducks love it and the garden is loving the dirty water.

Good Luck
