So I've bought a new property, 2 acres, that has a couple canals flowing through the back. I was thinking of getting ducks and was wondering if I should give the ducks access to the canals. The problem I have is that the canals flow onto our neighbors property and I don't want the ducks getting away. If I built a fence that went under the water surface level how deep would it have to go to prevent them diving under it?

HERE IS MY IDEA. Don't put the fence into the water.. Stretch it only across the surface. Putting it into the water is only the beginning of problems.. Things floating will create dam action and take your fence down. If you encounter winters and freezing, the ice will possibly take your fence when thaw occurs . I think if you create a nice area environment for your ducks on your section of canal, , they will stay there and not wander off to greener pastures.

WISHING YOU BEST AND

Ducks can dive about 6 feet from what I've seen so you would have to have a fence that goes down that far. If you don't fence it under the water the ducks will just go under the surface fence and off they will go.
